When I travel, while my boyfriend picks our itinerary, the first thing I do is to open Google and type the magical words “best bookshop in…”. If this was not enough, on Google Maps I have a “Bookshops” list and, wherever I go, I always buy a book written by a local author. I guess I am not the only one, am I?
I know this is probably not the most original sentence to write, but in almost all the bookshops I have visited, there is this special something… I don’t know if you have ever watched The Pagemaster… well, this is exactly what happens to me every time I walk into a bookstore or a library.
It’s like entering a parallel world: every single shelf tells a different story… There, on the left, the Mystery section is waiting for you, looking sinister and suspicious as always. A few shelves away the colourful world of Romance, full of magic, Happy Ever Afters and knights in shiny armours. Just beside, Adventure books, with their worn covers… if you walk close enough, you can almost hear the Pirates singing Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum.
And this is just the beginning… you may not know it, but every book is secretly testing you, to understand whether you’ll be the perfect pair for them or not, and shop-assistants are silently telling you “I know” in that very distinct Friends style.
